on this occasion John Mackay's opponent was
Rev. Dr. John Polkinghorne KBE, FRS
 
John Polkinghorne is Canon Theological of Liverpool Cathedral. He was a leading Cambridge physicist, and remains a prolific author. According to the web site which bears his name, www.polkinghorne.net he is "one of the greatest living writers and thinkers on science and religion: a truly world-class scientist turned priest, currently one of two Revd FRS  and one of only 3 Revd KBEs." Amongst his many awards John Polkinghorne won the Templeton Prize for Science and Religion in 2002 and also became the Founding President of the International Society for Science and Religion in same the year.  Rev. According to Cathedral staff around 1100 people attended this very successful evening.
